Isn't the image of an Issola (the bird) as discussed in Issola (the
book) that of great stillness and grace--until suddenly it has a fish
in its beak, and in the next moment the fish is gone...and you never
even saw it move?

It's not any sort of leap to "devours souls without warning"...as appropriate.
