Maybe his link with the Orb is similar to his link with Loiosh. Or maybe 
checking the time doesn't expend any energy, and his amulets/stones 
interrupt the flow of energy. I don't think concentrating briefly to get 
the time is the same as performing a spell, but it could be. I'm just 
trying to help Steve wiggle around this Crack. (Ew?)
