Excellent point. While I had been inclined to avoid muddying the water 
further, I'll suggest that "did themselves the honor" is better replaced 
with "had the honor" and leave it to the reader to imagine the various 
reasons why they embarked on the journey. That, IMO, would make it 
Practically Perfect in Every Way.
