A tentative pararectal answer to the question:  Maybe through Loiosh?
Loiosh can detect sorcery  even when Vlad can't.  Since witch and
familiar are bound together psychically, perhaps Loiosh shares Vlad's
Orb link, and can tell the time, and relay that piece of information
through to Vlad.
