If it were Vlad just trying to keep the details out of Kragar's life,
then why would he mention Crithnak's name at all?
Note, the mistake involved here is not really a misidentifying of
Crithnak as Triesco, or vice versa, it's mislabeling Crithnak as
Terion's lover. All the other facts that Vlad and Kragar throw around
regarding Crithnak are accurate. (Including the critical fact that
Vlad's actions led to her sister being soul-eaten).
I think you can make a case here that maybe Vlad's memory went south,
and *he* made a mistake about her identity (especially given how he
seems to easily forget Triesco's name--as he does when he should be
looking her up in the Imperial Library) but I don't think there's really
any way to justify Vlad deliberately misleading Kragar on this point.
Given how much other damning information he gives to Kragar, there's no
advantage to be had by Vlad throwing in this as a deliberate falsehood.
As Davdi says, it makes no sense.
