I don't know how to put this.  Mario is nearly unknown in person, 
instead only known by reputation.  There was no way known to contact 
him directly, as far as Vlad knew (let's leave the business with 
Aliera aside for the moment).  Mario appears to want to keep it that 
way, and thus, no hints to anyone that he disagrees with anything 
happen.  He is apparently willing to ask, on Aliera's behalf, if Vlad 
will essay to do something; a request that Vlad will of course honor 
because it is Cawti's problem.  And he is willing to do something in 
his own line of work, to help out, but like all of his work, there is 
no way for anyone to lay that to his door, either.
