While I'm not sure that Chaz-as-a-computer is the best theory in the world (it's become a bit of a cliche idea in recent SF stories) it's certainly not a possibility I'd seen discussed before. Might explain some aspects of his personality, and his ability to be exactly where he's needed at all times.

In my version, Chaz, as a self-aware entity, is older than Sethra. But Sethra, as an independent organism, is older than Chaz. Doubtless there are dozens of other scenarios in which both conditions could be satisfied.
