And the epilogue is part of the story, also to be technical.  Not so 
many years elapse, only 5-8.  The parallels get broken in a number of 
ways:  D'Artagnan has no wife, for example.  It wouldn't be as 
interesting a story if it was just a straight copy of Dumas, after all; 
part of the charm is in seeing how similar characterizations & very 
broadly similar situations lead to a different (but organic) plot.  
Still, I don't think Dumas can tell us anything about whether Papa Cat 
is still going strong or not. . . .
