I think it has something to do with the content-encoding. Scott's
post, in pure text form, looks something like this:

Notice that it's base-64 encoding, whereas the other posts that I
checked are 7-bit (and thus legible in plain-text format). Apparently
Scott's email uses a slightly more compressed form of text. I wouldn't
have noticed if Dorothy hadn't mentioned it because Gmail does decode
base64 text. Interesting.
