One of those inconsistencies of story writing.  Humans came from
space, but have regressed to a medieval type of culture.  Dragaerans
were gene engineered from human stock, and live three thousand years.
They, too, have adopted the nearly medieval culture of the humans, but
have magic to use instead of the lost technology.  Culture of both
races has stagnated three hundred milenia (that's six times longer
than there have been homo sapiens on earth at this point, folks).

Stories like these are fun to read, but don't look for any
relationship to actuality in the background, folks.
