And even if Vlad is correct, the quotation works equally well for
"Blackwand failed to eat Loraan's soul" as for "Blackwand decided not
to". Vlad may have no idea himself which applies in this case.

Which, I suppose, is what Steve meant by "it could be read any number
of ways".

I assume Blackwand knows whether she tried to eat Loraan's soul;
Morrolan knows whether he asked Blackwand not to eat Loraan's soul;
Loraan may have known why his soul didn't get eaten; and pretty much
everyone else is just guessing. (SKZB may know, or may not have decided.)
