Early Tim Powers novels had an obligatory messy hand injury scene: see 
especially _The Anubis Gates_, _Dinner at Deviant's Palace_, and 
_The Drawing of the Dark_. He's mostly grown out of it these days, but 
it's still the subject of the occasional joke, like this one. SZKB may 
even be sending up the kinds of injuries that Vlad picks up regularly: 
those have to be annoying for Vlad, but not put him right out of action, 
so hands are a reasonable option.
