Zerika is like Vlad and Morolan in that she definitely entered the Paths
of the Dead while living - which seems to be an option for anyone
sufficiently determined - and was permitted to leave.

She acts, in fact, as if she is some kind of guardian of the Empire.
Given that she and Dzur Mountain have defended it in unknown ways
against the Jenoine, that may actually be the case. The obvious people
to have given her the job are the Lords of Judgement, and this may well
be the source of her extraordinary lifespan before becoming undead
(which is, remember, quite recent in terms of her total "life"). Which
opens the idea that her voluntary death may have been an attempt to
resign the post, which was declined.
