I had assumed this was a reference to the great Sherlock Holmes story 
"Silver Blaze" - Holmes is pointing out that one can infer information 
from an expected event not happening.  I think Agyar is just being a jerk,
but anyway his claim is that sociology is intellectually dishonest by not 
at least confronting Marx.
