The middle class does consume.    But it also produces.   And it's where the government gets most of its income from.

The wealthy/powerful don't want a middle class.   But for the last couple of centuries, they have recognized that the middle class provided the money that gave them power over their peers.

If automation changes this economic fact, the powerful won't be at all unhappy.
