The chapter titles were amusing (the ones I recognized) and I got the whole gothic pastiche/parody thing, but what was up with Vlad constantly spelling out T-A-L-T-O-S?  Was that a reference I just didn't get or was it just some amusing little tic that got a bit out of control?
