I've got another theory......Kragar is Mario's son and possibly....Aleira's
son.  Given the stigma of bastardry is that society she may not have felt
able to publicly acknowledge him and he get's kicked out of the house due to
his talent and joins the Jhereg instead of honorably becoming a Teckla!  His
talent would also make him a fine assassin.

It would tie a few things up nicely, but is probably too neat.
