Shortly after coming to the throne, the Iorich Emperor would discover a
gaping hole in the Imperial Treasury. After an extensive investigation,
it is revealed that there was a Jhereg plot to embezzle funds, coercing
or bribing those trusted to oversee financial administration. Thanks to
diligent work by a hitherto lowly treasury official - let us call them X
- the plot is uncovered and all those responsible executed, many
protesting their innocence to the last. The money, however, is never
recovered. Despite this mishap X is rewarded for his/her efforts with a
promotion. As the years pass they becomes more and more important,
until they gain the Emperor's trust as one of his closest advisers.
When the cycle turns and the Yendi come to power, all those involved in
the previous Iorich reign are long dead and gone. X's heir, however, is
fast making a name for themselves as a courtier and politician - until,
in a random guards raid, they are found engaging in activities
particularly embarrassing to their house, and forced to resign. Various
other officials across the government are either publicly disgraced or
quietly disappear. Everyone wonders why the Emperor looks so smug
whenever he/she deals with the Jhereg... whilst the Jhereg look pretty
damn disgruntled.
Nah, it could never happen!
