In a general sense, I think this is a fair comparison. It works the opposite 
direction, also. From the standpoint of the East, they are civilized Europe 
whereas Faerie (The Empire) is The Orient; a place of mysterious people, 
strange customs and inscrutable magic.

I imagine that the people who actually live near the Western/Eastern 
Mountains on either side tend to take a more practical view of things given 
that they interact with each other more frequently, what with wars, trade 
and immigration in one direction or the other.
