A brief essay on duelling by Arthur Krystal -
http://www.newyorker.com/arts/critics/books/2007/03/12/070312crbo_books_krystal
- may be of interest to this list. In particular the claim that
WWI and its attendant slaughter helped end duelling. I wonder if there
was a general cultural shift after the Interregnum against the practice
(outside of sui generis Castle Black's floating endless party [is that a
reference to a party in one of the later Hitchhiker books, incidentally?])
or if death's impermanence under the new Orb allowed it to continue
(perhaps after a pause). Or perhaps resurrection made the whole
enterprise seem a bit silly.
