I'm not sure what the custom would be, though I have this impression that 
"custom" was more about the personal preferences of the assassin than a 
general policy of the Jhereg. I guess I shouldn't be making statements 
without books nearby to reference, but I want to say that it wasn't unusual 
for the fee to be considered a kind of retainer, that the assassin could 
return without problem if he decided that the job was too dangerous. I may 
be making that up.

I'm guessing that Vlad's response to a threat like that would have been a 
knife between the ribs at the earliest possible opportunity.
