But what Loiosh senses is _during_ the spell, not before, when Vlad
is removing the gold stone for zero reason.

Sb could be a door, not a wall. Uhh, a locked door.

But the claim is that the gold stone only works when on Vlad's chest?
I don't see why it wouldn't be as effective held in his hand a few
inches from his body.

"Hey, dude, there's a guy in the next village who's tall as Shaquille
O'Neil but he's skinnier than your sister, and he's giving away gold
to anyone who'll tell him about the Count! You should go get you some
of that."

"So, Mr. Dahni, I'd like you to go have a chat with a man. He's really
deadly dangerous so be careful, and incidentally he's got bad night vision
so if he attacks you hide someplace dark. By the way don't go blabbing
that to him, I want it to be a surprise. Just go ask him what he's up
to, since I'd rather you not listen to scuttlebutt or try to talk to the
locals about him pretending the Count is interested. And, well, let's
not attack until he's had a chance to get suspicious. And, uhh, going
to Vlad and asking for a bigger bribe for the truth then getting out
of town - bad idea."

As I recall in _Athyra_ Vlad brainwashes the fellow on the road, and
anyway it's a trap, and anyway he walks into it noisily and waits for
it to be sprung.
