Indeed. I would say that it is Vlad's mood that has been darker and that 
that has been coloring the flavor of the books set at the times between 
/Teckla/ and /Orca/ (inclusive). (With the exception being /Athyra/ -- 
which is really more colored by Savn's naivety as it focuses on him.)

/Issola/, and /Dzur/ seemed a little more up-beat... Though Issola is 
clearly the more light-hearted of the two.

I think it says a lot for Vlad's development, however, that corpses 
piling up under his feet are starting to affect his mood. Back in the 
days of /Jhereg/ and even /Teckla/, he never seemed to think about the 
negative aspects of his work. Until Kelly, Paresh, Cawti (et al) started 
throwing it in his face. Even then, it took a while for their words to 
sink in.

I expect the mood of the series may brighten up a bit again as he 
manages to come to better terms with his past.
