He does so in the last sentence of the last chapter of Iorich. Not
including the epilogue. I think someone pointed out already that the
interaction between Vlad and the Empress in this book were well done.
In the first meeting, he is clueless as to the respectful procedure
and takes an unspecified number of steps back. By the second meeting,
he learns, and takes seven steps back because Harnwood says (politely)
that the Empress is willing to see Count Szurke, indicating that, as
others have pointed out, what the Empress tells Vlad in the first two
meetings is political in nature and so possibly untrue. In their final
meeting, he takes five steps back... I though the why was obvious at
first but now I'm not so sure. Was it out of politeness, having seen
the Empress drunk, to make clear on the way out that this stays
between friends? Was it thanks for doing what she could, despite it
being perhaps wiser (and more just) to do otherwise? Just the informal
nature of their final visit? Probably a combination of the above, but
I thought it was a nice touch.
