Heck, not just friends.  _Athyra_ again -- Vlad says he feels an
obligation to avenge Reins's death on his account, and Reins is just a
guy Vlad dealt with once and couldn't even remember right away.  Vlad is
a very, very, personal person, and responsible in his own way.  Vlad
also has other reasons for what he does in Athyra, but I'm inclined to
think he wasn't lying.

(Especially since, since he felt safe enough teleporting himself and
Savn across the fields, the prudent thing would have been to simply
teleport far away.  Just abandon the Jhereg assassin and undead Athyra,
running away works and the wizard isn't his problem.)
