Suddenly, the whole situation is overturned: there's no point in 
fighting, because the whole place is crawling with Phoenix Guards, plus 
the Warlord, and heaven knows who else. At which point it suddenly 
became clear to me that Khaavren (referenced as Pappacat in the 
quotation at the start of Chapter 6, see _Orca_ for his involvement with 
the Empire's security services) has been taking an interest, and in his 
typical manner, has spotted the place where that whole matter can be 
dealt with, neatly and with certainty, and to the advantage of the 
Empire. 

Kudos, also, to the total upset of the atmosphere Steve pulled when Vlad 
switched from subtle to overt two pages earlier. The point was to shock 
the assassin enough that he could be killed swiftly; surprising the 
reader is a useful side-effect.
