People keep fish which live a year or two.  They put a lot of energy into 
growing annuals.  They have rats as pets, which live just a few years on 
average.

And for that matter we don't know how long she's had dogs for pets, except 
for the inference that getting one was related to the assault on her 
husband, unless I'm forgetting something, so she may well not have gotten 
tired of them dying.
