Actually, putting your ideas together, perhaps loraan hid his soul in his pararectal area....

It was potentially created by the gods to facilitate her in creating and maintaining the empire. I would go so far as to propose that Sethra is an artifact of the gods in some way. There has been much speculation into what type of undead she is, yet she doesn't evince the characteristics of a vampire as far as we know other than a pallid skin tone and sharp little teeth. In the terms we understand, in popular fiction/roleplaying, she'd be more of a hybrid vampire/lich, with a mountain holding her soul safe. After hundreds of thousands of years, what else would be big enough? The gods can't understand/maintain a good connection with 'humanity' as Verra's misunderstandings often illuminate. They would need someone like Sethra, with ears a bit closer to the ground to stay on top of things. She, in turn, somewhat manages the great weapons for them, and marshals defenses against the jenoine and other undertermined threats as needed. If she finds herself too far adrift from understanding those she protects, she might just need a .... nap :D
