I think it highlights that he finally has an emotional split with the
jhereg. It used to be 'us' vs the left hand of the jhereg. from his now
outside perspective its now them vs them. thus the right hand vs the left
hand. He's completed whatever internal journey was necessary to not
implicitly think of himself as part of the jhereg. he's outside now. the
question becomes what does he now think of himself as belonging to, if
anything. he's a supremely dangerous loose cannon, subject to murderous
whims and now possessing a weapon puissant enough to get the job done on
damned near anything. Obviously Verra and Sethra have plans for him. His
current circle of friends and his family are the only immediate ties he has.
Lady Teldra will most likely draw him into whatever his next sense of
belonging will be. Maybe I'm reading too much into Steve's plans for his
little creation, but I think there are most definitely plans for Vlad.
Whether he goes along with what the other characters do is obviously up to
the author, and his underlying sense of cool :D. He's obviously hinted at
some sort of loose association with the great weapons, most likely
spearheaded by Sethra (who apparently enjoys trying to herd cats.. cats with
great weapons for claws), and guided to some degree by the gods, and
specifically Verra. And this goes along with Sethra's purpose of protecting
the realms from jeonine and god knows what else.....
