My thought was that he might be a Jenoine.    It makes sense to me in a
different way that there might be an element of the Jenoine that didn't
agree with the overall Jenoine plans (whatever they may be).  We know
he's older than Sethra and that he can "work the defenses" (sorry, no
text cite at the moment), which would make sense countering them.

Either way, I suspect we'll have to wait to learn.
