I didn't feel they were flat so much as characters were
acting/interacting in subtle ways they wouldn't have before.
Particularly with Kragar, I got a feeling of "now you're supposed to be
one of the Big Boys, I can let you in on a Big Boy secret" that wasn't
there in the past & ditto, in a lesser sense, with Sethra, Keira, &
Mario. (The unspoken corollary is that now you have to *act* like one
of the Big Boys, too, which could be a pain for Vlad (-; )

I got a faint whiff of Hamett/Chandler at various points, mostly in the
2nd half of the book. Very faint, but suggestive.

The Journey to the East (sorry Hesse!) is pretty definitely going to be
one of the books, or else we are being set up for one of the bigger
throwaway red herrings; pays your money & takes your choice.

I've been amusing myself trying to think of situations for the unwritten
houses. For Lyorn recordkeepers, I can imagine some kind of /Absalom,
Absalom!/ thing where Vlad tries to figure out what the real story is on
some dusty record & gets 5 different takes on who did what to whom when
& where before tracking the quarry down to some deserted mansion that
catches fire. . . . Come to think of it, /Orca/ was sort of like that. . . .
