This sounds suspiciously like John Christopher's Tripod trilogy, "The White Mountains", "The City of Gold and Lead", and "The Pool of Fire".  (With a newer prequel story, "When the Tripods Came" released circa 1989)

I enjoyed these novels as a youth.
