Re: Loraan -- my favorite explanation is that Vlad is right about wizards; wizards -do- store their souls in their wizards' staff.  Which is where it was when Blackwand chopped into his body.  With his body dead, off went his soul to the Paths, because, of course, nobody would THINK about trying to revivify someone killed by a Morganti weapon.  However, the Gods must have looked at him and shrugged, letting him go back as undead; let's face it, him being there did put a lot of pressure and influence on Vlad, not just on his own, but with putting Savn there.
